About Kerri Axelrod, RD, LDN
Autoimmune, Thyroid, and Anxiety Patient Turned Functional Medicine Dietitian

I didn’t always work in nutrition.
In fact, I actively avoided science classes for most of my life and spent my 20s running full speed in the fast-paced world of national politics. I was working long hours on presidential campaigns and the world of DC politics, immersed in policy and communications. From the outside, it looked like I had it all together. But behind the scenes, my health was crumbling.
I was anxious, exhausted, constipated, bloated, gaining weight that wouldn’t budge, and wired-but-tired nearly every day. Doctors dismissed my symptoms as “just stress” or “normal.” I tried therapy, one medication after the next, more coffee, and more workouts. But, nothing worked.
And even though I grew up in the peak of ‘90s and 2000s diet culture, with an “almond mom” and a low-fat everything lifestyle, I still thought I was doing all the right things. Eat less. Move more. Power through. Right?
Until it all stopped working and I realized conventional medicine couldn’t help me.
In my late 20s, I hit a wall in my health. In 2011, I first learned about functional medicine and for the very first time I had hope that real healing was possible. But my first experience wasn’t what I expected. Unfortunately, traditional functional medicine just swapped my prescriptions for supplements and my low-fat, low-calorie diet for an elimination diet. I still didn’t get better.
Like you, I’m a problem solver and action taker. I knew in my gut there was something deeper going on. So I made a decision that changed everything: I left politics, went back to school, and spent the next decade studying the science behind gut health, hormones, anxiety, nervous system work, nutrition and women’s bodies. I took my first real science class in my 30s so trust me when I say I get what it’s like to be overwhelmed by health information and not knowing where to start.

Then came turning 40, and my body changed again (practically overnight)
What used to work... stopped working. I was gaining weight rapidly, losing muscle mass, struggling to sleep, and watching my hair thin with no obvious explanation. Once again, I was told “this is just part of aging.” But I knew better. This time, I dug deeper. I uncovered the missing pieces no one was talking about in perimenopause.
What started as personal curiosity turned into professional obsession. I realized how many high-achieving women like me were struggling in silence, dismissed by doctors, told to “just relax,” or handed birth control or weight loss drugs and sent on their way.
So I went back to the research, advanced trainings, and clinical practice, and built a four-step method to address the real root causes behind the hormone and digestive symptoms so many women experience in their 30s and 40s.
Over the last decade I’ve invested over $100k into my education, so you don’t have to. Today, I blend clinical expertise with lived experience to help women finally feel like themselves again, without the guesswork or generic advice.

I’m a Board-Certified Registered Dietitian with advanced training in functional medicine and root-cause healing. I specialize in complex cases involving gut health, hormones, anxiety, perimenopause, thyroid conditions, and nervous system dysregulation.
I’ve recovered from chronic Lyme disease, mold toxicity (twice!), and what I call my “perimenopause surprise party” at 40 when my body completely changed overnight. I had to rethink everything I thought I knew about hormone health. My personal experience paired with my clinical training is what helps me support women at such a high level who feel like they’ve tried everything and are still searching for answers.

Bridging the gap between science and policy
Before becoming a functional medicine registered dietitian nutritionist, I worked at the intersection of politics, public health, and communications. That experience didn’t disappear when I changed careers, it simply evolved.
Today, I also aim to help organizations and institutions shape better, science-driven health policy for women. I bring together my background in presidential politics, my policy and regulatory acumen, and my functional medicine expertise to inform policy and projects that sit at the crossroads of real health change and systemic reform.
If you're a brand, organization, or policymaker interested in elevating women's health initiatives, food ingredient reform, or nutrition policy, you can learn more about my consulting work here.
learn more about consultingIf we haven’t met yet, here’s what you should know:
- I’m always down to talk about constipation, cortisol, or why your labs say “normal” but you still feel off
- I’ve read hundreds of GI-MAPs (yes, poop tests) and deeply believe in data + context > diagnosis
- You’ll probably catch me unboxing supplement orders or recording nerdy Instagram stories in leggings
- Healing isn’t linear, but it is absolutely possible
- I love a good matcha latte, am always trying to avoid a brutal Boston winter, and am either knee-deep in science or watching reality TV (there’s no in-between for me)
- And no, you don’t have to give up coffee (unless you want to 😉)
